Church Administration

The purpose of this ministry is to help pastors, staff members, minister’s spouses, committee members, and members of the church leadership team to lead, proclaim, care for and administer the people and resources of the church in carrying out their mission.

How the Mission is Carried Out

This mission is achieved through statewide, area, and associational conferences and workshops carried out in seven primary areas:
  1. Provide training to help churches and ministers as they lead, proclaim, care and administer.
  2. Provide printed resources for special church events.
  3. Resource areas include worship planning, sermon planning, ordination, licensing, dedication services, and other special days.
  4. Provide resources for church documents.
  5. Resources provided include job descriptions for all staff, personnel policies, job descriptions for all committees, job descriptions for all church officers, articles of incorporation (formerly called church constitution), bylaws, policies, procedures, preparing a church administration policy manual, staff appraisal, church anniversary celebrations, etc. and many more.
  6. Provide programs, resources and support for bivocational pastors and smaller membership churches.
  7. Provide programs and resources for Church Weekday Education.

Church Administration Resources

Pastoral Enrichment Network (PEN) units are groups/fellowships of pastors that meet within Baptist Associations to enrich the members for the fulfillment of God’s Call in their lives through encouragement, equipping, and enabling. PEN was developed by the Resource Center for Pastoral Excellence at Samford University in partnership with Gary Farley, one of Southern Baptists’ most experienced rural ministry consultants. Though the principles involved would be of help to any pastor, the focus in the development of the PEN units has been the bivocational pastor.

A PEN unit is made up of ministers who meet monthly for two to three hours. The primary elements of each meeting are content, reflection, discussion and prayer.

The goals of PEN are –
– Provide information to pastors that will be of value to them
– Provide an opportunity for reflection and discussion, focusing on application in their lives and ministries
– Provide enrichment through fellowship and prayer

Pastoral Enrichment Network units –
– may use any name
– are led by the Director of Missions or a seasoned pastor
– meet at the time that is best suited to its members
– select materials based upon the needs and interests of the members
– may include special events from time to time
– may meet in conjunction with seminary extension or other training models that are already in use
– may include those who are called to ministry but have not yet served a church

The “network” aspect of PEN goes far beyond the group meetings. The members will begin to relate as friends and partners in ministry. Though great resources and very helpful instruction may be received during the process, it will be the relationships that will have the greatest impact upon the members. That is one reason for using the word “network” rather than group or meeting.

A primary purpose of this ministry is to assist churches in their search for ministers and to assist ministers in their search for places of service. The local church is assisted in four ways:

1. Materials to assist in the search process

2. Training of the committee. (A two-hour training program is provided by the director of the department).

3. Resumes. (There are usually 600-800 active resumes available to be shared with churches by request according to the criteria the search committee designates).

4. Job posting. Your church can decide itself if it would be appropriate to post your open position publicly on our site –

Ministers are assisted in their search by counsel as to how to best carry out the search process and by the sharing of one’s resume. Crisis ministry is another aspect of this office’s work.

1. Conflict consultation is a performed function of the department director. He is available to personally consult with a pastor, deacon chairman, deacons group or a whole congregation in helping a church decide how to manage its conflict.

2. Counseling is made available to ministers and their families who are having personal difficulty. A list of competent, Christian counselors is maintained in the office and counseling is subsidized at $30 per session.

3. Also available is emergency financial assistance for ministers who have been terminated by an Alabama Baptist church.
