Transitions Can Be Difficult

Transitions can be difficult, disorienting and distressing – from middle school to high school, high school to college, and college to young adulthood.

This year, around 2 million students will graduate college. You hear your name called to cross the platform. Families will celebrate. You will be cheered. You move your tassel from one side to the other.

Between tearful goodbyes, hugs and final conversations, the gaze always turns to the future.

What’s next? Friendships will transition. Some will last a lifetime, and some will just become a passing glance on social media. There will be a major shift from being surrounded by thousands of people and friends to not having that support network.

A transition happens with your time. Instead of going to (or skipping) classes and planning your day around school and friends, you will be challenged in a new job and new friendships.

Recently, I have been reminded in Scripture that during times of transitions God still challenges us to go and be on mission wherever He has placed us:

·         Paul uses his tentmaking skills as a platform for the Gospel.

·         Philip goes to Samaria, and then he went to the Ethiopian eunuch.

·         Peter went to Cornelius.

·         The woman at the well goes to tell her village.

In Scripture, we often see people intentionally going. One doesn’t just drift into sharing the Gospel or using one’s vocation as ministry.

You wake up and pray for the opportunities you are going to have. Who is God going to place in your path and will you go share with them?

In Ephesians 2:10 (NIV), Paul states, “For we are God’s handiwork, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do.”

When the fears of the future persist (fears of the unknown and being uncomfortable), when you find yourself given the prospect of a new job – a new town, a new dynamic with friends and family, a new “whatever” – remember that this could be an opportunity for you to do those good works and that this could be something God has been preparing you for.

As you go this summer, remember where God has brought you and He wants you to GO for Him.
