One of the largest gatherings for a Tuesday evening session of the Alabama Baptist State Convention was in 2008 at First Baptist Church, Montgomery, when Rick Burgess, co-host of the popular radio program, “The Rick and Bubba Show,” spoke and musician Kevin Derryberry led worship.
That same team returns to lead us in worship at this year’s state convention annual meeting November 14-15 at Whitesburg Baptist Church in Huntsville. The duo will again be featured in the Tuesday evening session, beginning at 6:45 p.m.
The focus of Burgess’ remarks and the theme for the entire gathering will be “Disciple: Be One. Make One.” based on Christ’s admonition to His disciples in Matthew 16:24 that true discipleship involves denying self, taking up one’s cross and following Him.
Prior to that session, a special dinner event has been planned featuring Rick’s wife, Sherri, a sought-after speaker in her own right and author of “Bronner: A Journey to Understand.” Cost for the meal is $15 and registration is required at alsbom.org/burgess. Everyone is invited to this inspirational event.
Other highlights of the annual Alabama Baptist “family reunion” include a message by convention president John Thweatt, pastor of First Baptist Church, Pell City, and the convention sermon by Stuart Davidson, pastor of Eastern Shore Baptist Church in Daphne. Two theme interpretations scheduled for Tuesday morning and Wednesday morning will also serve to amplify the focus on discipleship.
Combine these messages with reports from various ministries and entities, an update on the new State Board of Missions building being constructed in Prattville, and the opportunities for fellowship in the hallways and exhibit area, and you can see that the table has been set for a wonderful time of celebration and inspiration.
