State Board of Missions Receives Six Communications Awards

The Alabama Baptist State Board of Missions was honored with six awards in the 52nd annual Wilmer C. Fields Awards Competition held as part of the Baptist Communicators Association 62nd annual meeting and workshop. The awards ceremony took place at Falls Creek Baptist Conference Center in Davis, Okla., on Friday, April 15, 2016.

State Missionary Doug Rogers received two awards: first place for the feature article (more than 1500 words), “Lessons Learned: ‘Woodlawn’ movie extra shares first-hand experience from being on film’s set,” and first place for the script, “51st Annual BCA Wilmer C. Fields Awards,” co-written by Jennifer Rash of The Alabama Baptist.

State Missionary Jesse Conte received two awards in the design division: third place for the speciality item, “The Gift of Literacy,” and third place for a direct mail piece promoting Alabama Baptist Boys Camps, “Where Adventure Begins.”

State Missionary Brian Harris received two awards: third place for the Youth Evangelism Conference site (yecal.org) in the website, event or promotion site (adapted template) category and first place for the blog series, “New York City Church Planters,” on A18C.org

In addition, Bethany Rogers, who does freelance work for the State Board of Missions and is the Tuscaloosa County Baptist Association’s communications specialist, received four awards: third place for her design work for the Youth Evangelism Conference site (yecal.org) in the website, event or promotion site (adapted template) category; third place for the video, “Pockets of Darkness: South Tuscaloosa Multi-Housing,” in the editorial feature, more than 3 minutes category; third place for “Green Village” in the feature photography division, domestic, single; and second place for “Pockets of Darkness: South Tuscaloosa Multi-Housing” in the promotion and advertising, digital ad division.

Several other Alabama Baptist entities were also honored at the workshop. The Alabama Baptist won a total of three awards in the news and feature writing divisions. The University of Mobile received three awards in the audio-visual, public relations and interactive communications divisions. Samford University won three awards in the design and audio-visual divisions. In addition, Nathan Troost, a Samford graduate and former video producer for Samford, won two awards in the audio-visual area, including that division’s grand prize award. Troost now directs his own company, Lantern Vision.

More than 400 entries were submitted for judging this year. The awards competition is open to all Southern Baptist communicators who are members of Baptist Communicators Association, meaning the entries above were judged against other state conventions, colleges and universities, state newspapers, children’s homes, and national and international missions agencies.
