#teachmehowtopray – Wait do people still use hashtags?
At age 33, I am a millennial, but students are daily having to bring me up to speed on what’s trending and the proper context of words and technology. It feels like I am still in school and I have so much to learn.
Based on my age, education and position, you would think that I would be the teacher but, honestly, they are teaching me just as much.
This past summer, with what seemed like the height of the COVID-19 panic, our plans for a summer leadership project, affectionately named “Bible Boot Camp” by the students, was hijacked. We were scheduled to meet for ten days, twice a day, totaling 40 hours to grow us as leaders in Christ. Okay, maybe the name “Bible Boot Camp” was accurate.
In response to the pandemic, we moved our classes online. During this time, we learned a variety of things, but the one that seemed to be the most memorable was the “How to Pray“ class.
For this session, we had a guest teacher, Ghena Burson, a homeschooling mom of 12. Ghena taught us to pray using the P.R.A.Y. acrostic (Praise, Repent, Ask, Yield) according to Matthew 6:9-13, and it really stuck.
This lesson was so impactful that we have continued to use it as an evangelism tool.
Recently, we received approval to set up three tables on ASU’s campus where we will engage 200-plus students for the sake of the Gospel and teach them to pray by passing out “How to P.R.A.Y.” t-shirts.

“In this manner, therefore, pray: Our Father in heaven, Hallowed be Your name. Your kingdom come. Your will be done On earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our debts, As we forgive our debtors. And do not lead us into temptation, But deliver us from the evil one. For Yours is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever. Amen” ( Matthew 6:9-13 NKJV).
- Praise – Literally praise God!
- Repent – Turn from sin and to God.
- Ask – Make your request known.
- Yield – Allow God to lead you.
