8 Ways to Deal with Criticism

Criticism is part of life and certainly a part of ministry. Some criticism is just, but I find most of it is unfair. Nevertheless, it stings! How we respond to this criticism matters. Here are eight ways I attempt to deal with criticism while staying faithful to the calling God has placed upon my life:

1. Expect it.

If you’re a Christian leader, you will be criticized. Just look at Moses. Look at Jesus. Knowing that criticism is part of ministry won’t remove all the sting, but it will soften the blow. Martin Luther said it well: “If Christ wore a crown of thorns, why should His followers expect only a crown of roses?”

2. Evaluate it.

Is there any truth in it? Even when criticism feels unfair or unfounded, I’ve often found a nugget of truth tucked inside. Ask God to show you what you need to hear.

3. Gauge how widespread it is.

Sometimes, you’ll hear, “Pastor, a group of us are concerned…” Often, that group turns out to be the person and their spouse! Be careful not to overestimate how many are truly upset.

4. Give it to God.

He is your defender. Take your wounded heart to Him in prayer. Sometimes, I physically write down the criticism and symbolically give it to Christ. Whenever I’m tempted to pick it back up and stew on it, I return to that piece of paper and remind myself it’s already His.

5. Grow from it.

Criticism, even painful criticism, is a tool God uses to shape us into the image of His Son. Ask yourself: What can I learn? How can I grow?

6. Share it wisely.

Don’t broadcast it to the whole church; share it with trusted leaders and close prayer partners. We all need godly friends who will pray for us, encourage us, and remind us why we’re called, especially when the attacks weigh heavily.

7. Love through it.

Love your enemies. Pray for those who persecute you. It’s hard—let’s be honest. Our flesh wants to lash out. But Proverbs 15:1 reminds us: “A gentle answer turns away wrath.” Respond with grace, even when everything in you wants to fight back.

8. Stay resolute despite it.

Don’t let criticism immobilize you. You were called to be faithful to Christ, not to win a popularity contest. Galatians 1:10 reminds us that we are servants of Christ, not men. Stay the course.
